Both art and technology can often appear inaccessible and exclusive to the uninitiated. As an audience member, one is frequently assigned a passive role—merely an observer or consumer.
Squareplay is an installation that seeks to bridge the distance between spectator, art and technology through the interplay of sound and image, making the audience an active participant in the artwork itself.
Comprising animated visuals and sound compositions projected onto a cubic, three-dimensional sculpture, Squareplay is controlled through a keyboard interface. As visitors engage with the keys, they generate and transform a dynamic work of light and sound upon the sculpture’s surface, placing themselves at the very heart of the installation.
Squareplay was created as part of an exhibition presented by Dalarna University in Falun in 2011.
